We got to our hotel in Brisbane last night after what felt like a long flight from Auckland. This morning we set out to explore a little bit of Brisbane and got to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary to hold a koala and feed kangaroos!! On Monday Australia celebrates the Queen's birthday, so they have a long weekend with lots of activities happening, one of which is horse races. Because of this the buses were pretty late and traffic was bad. We were a little confused about the bus system but luckily we met a friendly lady who helped us navigate our way to the sanctuary and showed us some cool things to do while in Brisbane.
We also had the amazing opportunity to hand feed kangaroos at the sanctuary. It was a great experience being so close to such powerful creatures. Kangaroos have giant feet, wet nose, and veery soft fur. While feeding the kangaroos it felt a lot like feeding a dog by hand. You could feel their tongue and every once and a while feel their teeth. Here is a video of me feeding a kangaroo. | We all agree that the best part of today, and probably what will be the best part of Australia, was getting to hold a koala! This is Eeyore, she was a rambunctious little girl who liked to wiggly around a lot. Eeyore's claws were pretty sharp and she dug into my shoulders like they were a tree. She was so soft though, I just wanted to cuddle her! We got to see a wide variety of animals that I've never seen in any of the zoos that I have been to. We got to see a platypus, dingos, Tasmanian devils, wombats, and more! |
