Adjusting to a new time zone is very difficult! Especially when that zone is 19 hours ahead of the one that you are used to. After coming in late last night, and losing a day when we flew over the international date line, it was hard to get a full night's sleep when your body is telling you to get up at 1:30 am (or 6:30 am at home). We all slept on and off throughout the night and woke up starving!
After an adventure of exchanging money and finding a cheap breakfast, we made our way down to the harbour to explore the New Zealand Maritime Museum and to go sailing. We explored the vast New Zealand maritime history, from the first Polynesian explorers to sailing for sport. We had a lovely lunch on the warf, although we were nervous about losing our lunch once we set sail.
We had the amazing experience of sailing on the Ted Ashby, a scow boat named after the famous scowman, Ted Ashby. The crew's average age was about 70 years old, but they were a hoot and were excited for us to go sailing for the first time and to teach in Auckland. We got to help raise the sails, which is tough work, and sailed around the harbour. Unfortunately, it is winter in New Zealand right now and it started raining as soon as we got on the boat! But, we are Oregonians and were not fazed by a bit of rain.
